CO2 Powered Pool Torpedoes

Files available on Thangs.com so that you can build your own.

When I was growing up, torpedoes were a big feature in movies, TV and video games and something about them fascinated me. Now that I’m all grown up, I decided to make my very own CO2 powered torpedoes that you can launch in a small space like a pool. After a prototype design that proved the concept, I settled on a three piece 3D printed design that houses a 16 gram carbon dioxide cartridge as well as ballast to keep everything traveling smoothly. Printing takes about six hours for the torpedo and another four hours for the launcher. I printed these ones in 3D Fillies PLA+ filament. The torpedoes are launched by a device with a spring loaded nail that pierces the seal on the CO2 cartridge and sets the torpedo on its way. These things are great fun! Check out the video below to see how they perform. Down the track, I’m going to look at altering the launching system to fit a radio controlled vehicle for some underwater battles. The torpedo won’t harm anyone, but be cautious around the launcher (sharp object) and CO2 gas (high pressure and cold).
